Building Communication in a Child

Here is an idea to build communication in your child or students. Make Items Inaccessible- Place items in a spot where the child can see the items, but cannot obtain the item, without the assistance from the adult. This can be done in a number of ways. First, highly motivating items can be placed behind the adult, but in clear view. Since the child cannot go through the adult, he or she must communicate with the adult to receive the item.

School Observations

Here we are a few weeks into the school year. Some parents may want to request for in home providers to go into school and observer the child. Requesting a classroom observation can be difficult and I often get a lot of questions from parents on how to approach the teachers. Here are a few tips on how to keep things child focused and accomplish a lot in a short time.
First of all, it is important for the teachers to be on board and feel comfortable with another person in the classroom.

Lunchtime

We’ve been making a point to help Mason in this transition to his mainstreamed Kindergarten class. A big struggle thus far this year has been the lunch hour.
For centuries social interactions have occurred over food. Corporate meetings have been conducted over lunch, million dollar deals have been inked over drinks, and judging from the oversized bellies of some lawmakers, bills have been made into law, all over a common denominator: food.

Small Wonders

“Front... (tap, tap, tap) side… (tap, tap, tap) back… (tap, tap, tap) side… (tap, tap, tap)!”
Tap?
“Shuffle! Shuffle left!”
Tap?
“Switch feet! And front!...(tap, tap, tap)…”
(Watch self in mirror, feeling new leotard with hand, shake hips, smile)

Saying Goodbye

You never know what a child with autism may or may not understand........
About 2 years ago we got The Rock a dog - a Labradoodle. Part Lab/part Poodle - supposed to be great with kids with "issues". And she was. At first The Rock didn't have much to do with her. She got in his way, knocked him down, was hyper and chewed all of his toys! He would cry whenever she came running in the room.

New York - Revived

Angie and I spent last week in New York City. This was a much needed break from the madness of start-up life and the daily adventures of a family living with autism. We have been married for twelve and a half years. A good portion of the first five years was spent traveling to some very fun places. When you have a child with autism, travel often just flies out the window like the rest of your "planned life." Depending on circumstances, everything you knew prior to autism may seem like it vanishes into thin air.

A Day To Go Down In History

Is it possible to have one of the most disgusting autistic events and a great day of progress at the same time?
Yes. Yes, it is.
Poop. I could go into a lot of disgusting detail, but I'll spare you. I will say these words and you can use your imagination: spoonfuls, mold, mysterious smells, trampoline netting, smears, rotating fan, Jacob. Have fun with that.
And now for the good stuff because I'd like to get the occurrences of the last few hours out of my mind. However I doubt I will ever forget. It's seared there forever.

Gains

My son typically deflects responsibility because he doesn't 'get' that he is wrong. Could that just be a manipulative maneuver to not accept responsibility? No, that IS the autusm. His brain has a disconnect; a mental disabilty.
Cases in point:

DO NOT SIT ON THIS!

“Check with your infectious disease department before using these procedures.”
That was the first thing I read on the instructions. I was thinking, “Maybe I shouldn’t be using these procedures after all… I may be wrong, but I don’t think I even have an infectious disease department!”
I’ll back up a bit. We were about to try a new OT thing with Isabella. It’s one of those circular inflated cushions that you sit on. The idea is that it does some sensory magic with kids when they give it a sit.
